Even though it’s climbing to the top of many adventurers’ bucket lists, Southern Utah is still a hidden gem among the rest of the world. A breathtaking mixture of red rock canyons, soaring mountains, and raging rivers, Moab is a playground for those who love to hike, bike, climb, and even shop.
If you find yourself in the area and don’t know where to start, here are the top six things to do in Moab:
- Arches National Park
This is a no-brainer! Arches National Park is one of the most popular national parks in the country, and one of the top things to do in Moab, and for good reason. The park is home to over 2,000 natural stone arches, as well as numerous other interesting rock formations. hiking and camping are popular activities here, but be sure to bring plenty of water, as it can get very hot in the summer months.
There are plenty of campgrounds in the park, as well as many in and around Moab. You can even find beautiful spots up in the La Sal Mountains if you prefer the cabin vibe over tents.
- Dead Horse Point State Park
Dead Horse Point State Park is a must-see for any nature lover. The park offers stunning views of Canyonlands National Park and the Colorado River.
From the grand view point at Dead Horse Point, you’ll be blown away by the immense “loop” carved out of the rock by thousands of years of rushing water. Visiting this area has become one of the most popular things to do in Moab. It’s said that the area got its name because 19th-century cowboys used the unique formation of the point to create a natural corral that needed very little in the way of barricading for the one entrance and exit. A large number of horses died of heat exposure and dehydration, ironically only a couple thousand feet away from the mighty Colorado River.
- Canyoneering
Because of the thousands of canyons and cliffs to explore, canyoneering is one of the most popular activities in Moab. Be sure to hire a guide if you’re new to the sport, as it can be dangerous without proper experience and equipment.
You can make your way through stunning slot canyons at either the San Rafael Swell or Robbers Roost—two of our favorites. A good guide will be able to help you know which areas are best for beginners and where to go if you’re looking for a more technical experience.
- Whitewater Rafting
The Colorado River is a popular spot for whitewater rafting, and there are many companies in Moab that offer guided tours. This is a great way to cool off in the summer heat and get a thrill at the same time.
- Jeep Trip/Off-roading
One of the best ways to explore Moab is by Jeep. There are many companies that offer off-roading tours, or you can rent a Jeep and go exploring on your own. Just be sure to stay on designated trails, as some areas are very remote and difficult to access.
The best time to go is in the spring and fall when the weather is neither too hot nor too snowy. You can try out Aztec Butte Trail and Gemini Bridges, or leave it up to a guide to show you the best Moab has to offer.
- Moab Main Street
After a long day of adventuring, head to Moab’s Main Street for some food and shopping. There are many great restaurants and shops here, as well as a brewery and distillery. Most of the businesses are owned by locals and you’ll find great souvenirs and gifts.
