Moab is a small city located in Eastern Utah known for its unique and beautiful landscapes and natural attractions. While hiking and exploring Canyonlands and Arches National Park are popular activities, they’re far from the only things to do in the area.

If you’re planning your own visit to Moab — such as on our Wonders of the West 10 Day Scheduled Tour — keep reading. We’re bringing you 10 incredible ways to experience Moab, Utah.

1. White Water Rafting

After a few days of hiking and exploring the desert and rock formations of Utah, it’s a bit of a shock to the senses to stand alongside the mighty Colorado River. Cool off in the desert heat and take to the water on an exciting white water rafting trip.

Small Class I and II rapids are perfect for a fun, family-friendly float. You’ll have plenty of time between bumpy sections to check out the steep red rock canyon walls that rise out of the river.

2. Off-roading

Another way to experience Moab, Utah, and get your blood pumping is with an off-road adventure. In a dune-buggy style vehicle, you’ll explore the sand and slick rock landscapes that are just one of the reasons why Moab is so famous.

A guide will take you along an off-road trail to experience different types of terrain and learn how to navigate them in an off-road vehicle.

If you want a little more protection from the dirt and dust, you can opt for a Hummer Tour instead. You’ll still enjoy an off-road adventure but from the comfort of an enclosed vehicle. Explore petrified sand dunes and spot ancient eroded seabeds on this tour.

3. Helicopter Tours

It’s tough to truly appreciate the region’s unique landscapes from the ground level. Even from a higher vantage point, you can only see so far. But on a helicopter tour, you’ll have a chance to see the bigger picture.

On this 45 minute tour, you’ll get to see Dead Horse Point, the Colorado River, the Islands in the Sky District of Canyonlands, and more. Spot arches, canyons, and other formations from far above. Don’t forget to bring your camera for some incredible and unique aerial shots.

4. Zip Lining

Zip lining has gained popularity in recent years as a fun way to experience a landscape from above and enjoy an exciting ride. On our Moab zip lining adventure, you’ll enjoy a guided tour of over 250 acres of desert, located near the Sand Flats Recreation Area.

Speed along 6 zip lines and traverse a 100-foot suspension bridge on this tour. To get to and from your tour, you’ll also enjoy a 4×4 off-road adventure.

5. Hot Air Balloon Tours

A hot air balloon ride far above the red rock landscapes of Moab, Utah is definitely a bucket-list-worthy addition to your next vacation.

This slow and relaxing ride is the perfect chance to see the sandstone formations of Arches National Park in an entirely new way. You’ll be able to see the vast expanses of flat desert that stretch to the start of the La Sal Mountains in the distance, before curving sharply upwards. For an even more memorable adventure, plan to take to the skies at sunrise.

6. Paddleboarding

For a more relaxing way to experience the Colorado River, opt for a paddleboarding trip rather than white water rafting. This trip covers only flatwater portions of the river, making for a calm trip that’s great for beginners.

Paddle alongside sandstone cliffs and the border of Arches National Park. Take a dip to cool off along the way, and listen as your guide tells you about the history and geography of this unique area.

7. Canyoneering

Canyoneering is a method of exploring canyons, and especially slot canyons, using a mix of hiking, climbing, and rappelling to get from one point to the next.

Southern Utah is home to the largest concentration of slot canyons in the world. There are thousands of them across the state, many of which can be explored by visitors to national and state parks in the region.

If you’re up for a unique challenge and want to experience a side of Moab most visitors never get to see, this is one experience you’ll definitely want to add to your next trip.

8. Jet Boat Tours

For a heart-pounding, thrilling way to cool off on a triple-digit day, nothing beats a jet boat ride. On this tour, your driver will race and whip across the water for a fun and exciting adventure. You’ll slow down to spot wildlife, and enjoy a bit of a history lesson on this ride. Make sure to dress in clothes that you don’t mind getting wet — splashes are likely!

9. Mountain Biking

Those with mountain biking experience will definitely want to experience Moab’s famous trails. Whether you’re very experienced or fairly new to the sport, this adventure can be adapted to suit your needs. There are even scenic paved paths perfect for families to enjoy together.

10. Via Ferrata

Another unique sport that adrenaline-seekers will want to experience while visiting Moab is via Ferrata. This Italian term translates to “iron path,” and refers to the sport of following a climbing route along a steel cable attached to rock faces, steps, ladders, and other obstacles. You’ll need to put your climbing and rappelling skills to work to navigate this vertical trail.
